16gb and 512gb SSD or better will do the job handsomely. Unless this endeavor is in fact generating $ for you and you have the budget for the new MacBook Pro, the current tier down models with maxed out RAM and storage are going to work great for you.
#GOOD SPECS FOR LOGIX PRO MAC#
The M1 Mac mini has shown itself to be very capable of crunching audio, virtual instruments and fx. I would suggest that the “pro” level machine is not necessary for audio work. So for computers and phones the Apple chips are more than powerful enough for years to come. The was an article on Apple autonomous car project and all their work on Apple processors is focus on designing processors big enough for the AI a autonomous car and other AI will needs. The chip is sitting idle a lot wait for the user to do something even for basic music use. In general for the average computer consumer Mac's with M1 have hit the point of diminishing return.

There are some rumblings that next year might see a M1 Pro Mac Mini or iMac Pro and that I would prefer to a MBP. I've talked with other audio engineers and there is no need for the M1 Max it is designed for video creators, a M1 Pro with 64GB RAM will last doing audio for many years. Right now if I was to buy a new Mac (I'm tempted) I will buy the new MBP with the M1 Pro with 64GB RAM. Adding RAM can really extend the life of computers. That's part of why for Mac's I used iMac because I could add more RAM.

My approach over the decades has been for the current best that I can afford and that buys me years, decade of use.

Particularly with 24-32 tracks of midi prior to and after rendering to separate audio tracks.

Please assume that despite my general knowledge of laptop and PC's that I don't know how the 16GB / 1 TB internal SSD with USB3 external drives would perform in the 2 situations described above.

I know that the M1 chips way outperform the older fully specked Intel chip models. Lastly - for uploading my recordings, do I really need 10Gb Ethernet (on the Mac Mini) for an extra $90.00 or is 1 GB good enough.Īlthough I do tech support for a living right now, I don't know how these configurations would apply performance wise to the specialized needs above. Is it OK to run only 16GB with a 1 TB SSD on the base M1 chip in either scenario with external SSD's like the Samsung T7 USB3 drive or would an external Thunderbolt drive be needed for a closer performance level to the internal SSD? Can I keep the sample libraries on an external USB3 without glitching, or would I need to have the libraries on an internal drive OR exteranl Thunderbolt driveĭo not want to make a mistake in purchasing - if I could wait until possibly next APRIL would purchase a greater specked Mac Mini since I already have a new (old stock) external display that I can use. Other more expensive MacBook M1 MAX models allow more ram 32/64 and larger SSD'd - of course this adds to the cost considerably. If keeping the computer at home - a similarly specked M1 Mac Mini and Macbook Air with 16BK and a 1TB SSD comes in at just a couple of hundred dollars more, so no real problem there.
